#32: Round 5, 2008 live on Talkshoe

Another week of live podcasting on Talkshoe, this time without a guest. We tried to get someone from the dominant high school leagues, but they’re all on the Gold Coast enjoying some schoolies action!

We made a conscious effort to cut down the round review this week, to get the show length closer to 60 minutes than 90. We start with Josh Hill and Bernie Vince, the two players most likely to have hit the top of the rollercoaster in price this week, and also how close Nick Stevens is to the top. Then it’s onto a couple of players who made impressive 2008 debuts this week: David Armitage and Marcus Drum. M0nty talks up Sharrod Wellingham for the Anzac Day clash, and bemoans the problem of who to pick between Kieren Jack and Craig Bird.

We take a look at underperforming premium forwards, including Travis Cloke, Brad Johnson and Jonathan Brown. Then it’s onto the backs, with Joel Bowden, Peter Burgoyne, Lindsay Gilbee, Brendan Goddard, Mark Nicoski, Brett Jones, Beau Waters and Shannon Hurn all being scoured for value.

Among the bubble boys and rookies this week are Tayte Pears, Matthew Spangher, Garrick Ibbotson, Jack Riewoldt, Shane Valenti and Shane Mumford, and they all get the once over.

That’s the round review finished, and in record time! Then M0nty tries something new: an overview of each of the four fantasy positions, a discussion of the current top 10 scorers in each position and predictions on who is likely to be in that top 10 once the season has finished. You can play along by downloading FFGenie and adding filters to see only players of each position, and clicking on the Total column heading to sort the list by total Dream Team points.

#31: Round 4, 2008 live on Talkshoe with footylover18

icon for podpress  Standard Podcast [1:48:06m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (100)

This week we welcome to our live show Vamsee, a.k.a. footylover18, who is one of the people behind the wildly successful EliteDre@mTe@mers league. EDT is the reigning champion of the league competitions in both Dream Team and Super Coach.

You can’t say we don’t go for the squirrel on this show, Robert Harvey style. Before Vamsee knows it, we’ve pinned him down and asked him the tough questions about the lack of EDT presence in the top 20 DT and SC leagues after round 4. He goes on the counter-offensive, as expected, and has a few choice words to say about some of the challengers to EDT supremacy, including Mt Scopus high school, Simpsons league and the "Fed" conspiracy.

Onto player news, and obviously we need to answer the biggest fantasy issue first: who to trade for Barry Hall? Many names are mulled over. M0nty brings up the radical possibility of trading down for a rookie-priced player in order to patch up a leaky defence with a second trade, which causes some heated discussion. Kyle Reimers and Ben McKinley are named as the most likely candidates for such a move, both of whom are on the bubble this week.

Then it’s onto the regular round review. Andrew Lovett, Scott Welsh, Robert Murphy, Daniel Giansiracusa, Hamish McIntosh, Scott D. Thompson, Lachie Hansen, Jesse W. Smith, Cameron Bruce, Nathan Jones, Aaron Davey, Austin Wonaeamirri, Brendon Goddard, Jarryn Geary, Clinton Jones, David Armitage, Ryan Gamble, Steve Johnson, Jimmy Bartel, Martin Mattner, Ryan O’Keefe, Kieren Jack, Craig Bird, Matt Rosa, Quinten Lynch, Brett Ebert, Kane Cornes and Travis Johnstone are all discussed.

In our regular Hawk Talk segment… we talk mainly about the Crows! Michael Osborne, Cameron Stokes and Travis Tuck get the treatment from the Hawthorn team, while Scott Thompson, Nathan Bock, Bernie Vince, Brett Burton and Kurt Tippett

After that, we sift through Bret Thornton, Heath Scotland, Scott Pendlebury, Cameron Wood, Matthew Kreuzer, Matthew Richardson, Jordan McMahon, Jake King and Joel Bowden.

Before m0nty forgets (again!) we go through captain choices for round 5: Nick Riewoldt, Joel Corey, Jimmy Bartel, Scott Thompson, Jonathan Brown, Chris Judd, Daniel Cross, Brad Johnson, Chad Cornes and Kane Cornes are all thrown up as possibles.

Finally, m0nty goads fl18 into ranting about the 70 minutes of madness before round 1. Then someone from Talkshoe tells us the servers are about to explode, so we run for our lives!

Live Coaches Box Tonight (16/04/08 10:30pm (mel time))

Week 4 of the AFL season is behind us and Barry Hall is the big story. This will definitely be a big part of this weeks live Coaches Box podcast.

There are a number of ways to join us and the easiest is with the Talkshoe Pro client. I am using Skype Out which costs 3 odd cents per minute. If you want to call in, you might just want to call for your question on player reviews.  The other option is a VOIP client. You can find out more about using Talkshoe with a VOIP client here.

I have left the info from last week below.

To join, come to our Talkshoe site any time from 15mins before the show is due to start. If you want to call in, there is a US number you can call (with something like Skype at 3 cents a minute), you can call in from a VOIP (SIP) compatible client (your miles may vary) or by downloading Talkshoe’s pro client here:  http://download.talkshoe.com/TalkShoeSetup_windows.exe. I believe you have to sign up for a membership of the site, but it’s pretty painless.

Hope to see you there and have a great show! Also don’t fear, if you are unable to make it to the live show, the podcast will be available after the show is finished. Make sure you subscribe via iTunes so the show is ready on your iPod (or Computer) on Thursday morning for the day so you will be ready to work your teams before lockout!

#30: Round 3, 2008 live on Talkshoe

icon for podpress  Standard Podcast [1:44:57m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (94)

It’s the first week of price changes and there are plenty of winners and losers… with m0nty being one of the losers! :(

First cab off the rank in the round review is Josh Hill, of course. Then we move onto Scott West, Tim Callan, Brad Johnson, Brendon Goddard, Jarryn Geary and Hamish McIntosh.

During Hawk Talk we discuss Brad Sewell, Michael Osborne, Travis Tuck, Xavier Ellis, Cyril Rioli, Cameron Stokes and Mark Williams.

Then it’s onto the two winged Eagles Matt Priddis and Dean Cox, followed by Chad Fletcher, Ben McKinley, Scott Selwood, Brad Ebert, Chris Masten, Jamie McNamara, Matthew Spangher, Rhys Palmer, Chris Mayne, Bachar Houli, Ricky Dyson, Chris Judd, Matthew Kreuzer, Bryce Gibbs and Bret Thornton.

M0nty’s under the gun again for his round 1 spray against Barry Hall, with Molly taking the credit for defending the big bloke. Craig Bolton, Tadhg Kennelly, Martin Mattner, Craig Bird, Ed Barlow, Kieren Jack, Harry Taylor and Mark Blake all get a run.

The boys compare Joel Corey with Gary Ablett jnr, with m0nty predicting that the two will fight it out for top fantasy scorer of 2008. Steve Johnson, Brock McLean, Nathan Jones, Cameron Bruce, Joel Bowden, Jordan McMahon, Jake King, Nathan G. Brown, Paul Medhurst, Cameron Wood, Bernie Vince, Jason Porplyzia, Kurt Tippett, Brad Symes, Chad Cornes, Steven Salopek and Warren Tredrea are all discussed.

Among the issues of the week are sideways rookie trades, Lethal League housekeeping, the new Too Serious web site, the 2008.1 version of FFGenie, and the perils of moderating the FanFooty live chat. Finally, we mull over this week’s captain choices, coming off our highly successful week 2 recommendation of The Chad, with Simon Goodwin and Matthew Pavlich getting top votes.

Live Coaches Box Podcast - 9 April 2008

Hi guys,

Just a reminder that there will be another live Coaches Box AFL Fantasy Football (Dream Team and Super Coach) Podcast. Show starts at 10:30pm. The easiest way to get to it is by the link on the Left (or down below some times in IE). The show opens about 15min before the start time.

You can dial in either via the phone number (although its a US number) or via the Talkshoe Pro client (get it at their site). A headset is preferred but mic is fine. You can also participate in the chat.

TIA
Molly

#29: Round 2, 2008 live on Talkshoe

It’s a big round for all fantasy coaches as it’s the last time you can trade before the price changes kick in for VirtualSports competitions such as AFL Dream Team and Herald-Sun Super Coach. Many coaches are agonising over changing their team structure by shifting money from their forwards to their backs, which is the theme of this week’s podcast.

After the usual skiting over Hawthorn’s win, it’s straight into the round 2 review, with Albert Proud, Jed Adcock, Josh Drummond, Jonathan Brown, Nathan J. Brown, Cameron Wood, Travis Cloke, Nathan Jones, Cale Morton, Clint Bartram, Simon Buckley, Colin Garland, Josh Hill, Brad Johnson, Nathan Bock, Jason Porplyzia, Dean Cox, Mark Nicoski, Brad Ebert, Chris Masten, Quinten Lynch, Michael Gardiner, Justin Koschitzke, Bret Thornton, Marc Murphy, Brendan Fevola, Darren Pfeiffer and Des Headland under the microscope.

In our almost-official Hawk Talk segment we cover only seven players - Travis Tuck, Clinton Young, Michael Osborne, Stuart Dew, Xavier Ellis, Jarryd Roughead and Grant Birchall - though not before some wiseguy in the chat quips that we’re about to go through all 22!

Back to the rest of the comp: Barry Hall, Martin Mattner, Tadhg Kennelly, Heath Grundy, Alipate Carlile, Steve Johnson, Tom Hawkins, Brad Ottens, Trent West, Brent Stanton, Brett Deledio, Troy Simmonds, Nathan G. Brown, Jordan McMahon, Shannon Grant and Nathan Thompson get the once over.

After the official round review, we answer a few questions asked on the FanFooty blog, concerning Andrew Embley, Travis Boak, Ricky Petterd, Michael Johnson, Lachie Hansen, John Meesen and Leroy Jetta.

Finally we jawbone a bit about some potential problems with the Dream Team Eliminator, first discussed on BigFooty, and then try to choose a standout captain for round 3, with not much success.

Live R2 show, 10.30pm Wednesday 2 April

Week 2 of the AFL season is behind us and its time to start thinking about trading, new prices and the all important breakeven points. This will definitely be a big part of this weeks live Coaches Box podcast.

There are a number of ways to do it the easiest is with the Talkshoe Pro client. I am using Skype Out which costs 3 odd cents per minute.
