CB AFL Dream Team and Super Coach Podcast #65: Post Round 5, 2009
It doesn’t rain but it pours, and that’s certainly been the case in fantasy footy this week… including with FanFooty’s own problems. It’s raining donuts all over the place!
First off, m0nty and Molly discuss the recent technical problems with FanFooty’s servers, which leads into a general discussion about how fantasy fans interact with their favourite sites and each other, including through the FF live game chat. The boys also discuss the return of the Dream Team Eliminator this week… if you lose this week, you’re a mug!
On to the round review. Surgery for Shaun Burgoyne and poor form by Josh Carr means some potential spots opening up in the Power midfield, which could mean good things for Hamish Hartlett, Jason Davenport or Matthew Broadbent. m0nty throws up Jason Blake as a smokie for the large amount of options for replacements for the injured David Hille. Molly gives an update on his boy Courtenay Dempsey, while the Hille situation will mean different things for the fantasy prospects of Patrick Ryder, Scott Lucas and Adam McPhee. Leon Davis is currently the most expensive fantasy forward, with Jaxson Barham just starting at the other end of the scale.
In an extended deluxe director’s cut edition of Hawk Talk this week, m0nty and Molly go through Sam Mitchell, Garry Moss, Jordan Lewis, Luke Hodge, Lance Franklin, Jarryd Roughead, Travis Tuck and Beau Dowler. On the Eagles side, David Wirrpanda is looking like a fantasy premium but Tom Swift is waiting in the wings, while Dean Cox keeps on keeping on.
The injury to Lachie Hansen means a juggling of responsbilities down at Arden St, with new roles possible for Drew Petrie, Aaron Edwards, Shannon Watt, Levi Greenwood, Nathan Grima, Jack Ziebell, Ben Warren and Ben Ross. Jack Riewoldt fulfilled some of his potential this week, while Mark Coughlan would have been happy not to Hentschel himself, with Andrew Collins one of the few boys on the bubble this week.
Matthew Pavlich scored like the premium forward he was supposed to be this round, as did Aaron Sandilands, with Paul Hasleby doing the same in the second half after having a single handball to half time. Nick Malceski is most definitely on the chopping block. For Geelong, Mathew Stokes is currently drowning in honey, with Tom Hawkins another Cat to enjoy 490-possession days, as does Andrew Mackie and Joel Corey in fits and spurts. Jared Brennan is battling manfully in the ruck, but for how long?
Daniel Giansiracusa is about as high as some fantasy coaches can reach this week for a single trade toa premium. Matthew Kreuzer is about as low as most would go for a Hille repalcement, though some are abandoning all common sense and embarking on the John Meesen Experiment. Finally, Neil Craig has reverted to type and is denying Taylor Walker and Jared Petrenko time on ground as he does to most rookies not named Andy Otten.

Phillip "Molly" Malone is one of the most prolific Web pundits on Aussie Rules footy with his blog Mollyzine and podcast Molly's Monday Machination. He's an engineer and a Hawk fan, and you'll see his name everywhere.

You do realise Mont, we are setting ourselves up for a huge fall if one of us gets done in the eliminator this week!

I don’t think we’re in serious danger of that. Next week is a different matter, though.

Agreed with what you guys said right at the beginning of your podcast. It is a free services you provide for those people that love DT. If others want to pay for a service then they can go find a Telstra owned site.
As for all the angst and agro I myself think this comes down to two things. Newbies playing the game not doing their own research and getting burnt. But I do also think that people are taking this to seriously as it shows all the hallmarks of gambling addition, ie, irrational behavior, uncontrolled and random aggression, pleading for help etc etc.
This year DT has changed and become more of a high octane marketed money spinner. Through in the bookies who are looking to cash in.
Some thing to think about…………….
Anyhow thank you for the podcast from someone who is not going to gamble on DT and don’t go ape when there are injuries or I miss out on a good player.

Hey Moiecoute,
Thanks for the thoughts. I think you make some really good points about the links to Gambling and the similarities.

On the issue of livechat for score updates. Would be good to have the option to turn it off, the other week I was watching a game and they were chatting about a live score from another match that was a delayed telecast… I’m sure you understand the issue.
And yes, I did cover the side of my screen but thats not exactly the best option.
